About Credit Unions

A credit union is essentially a group of people with a common bond, who save their money together and provide loans at a reasonable rate of interest. When a member borrows money, they are in reality borrowing from their friends and fellow employees. These services are fair and much in needed particularly in Scotland’s poorer communities whose only real alternatives are loan sharks and high interest lenders. Credit unions can help people take control of their own finances and play an important role in tackling financial exclusion and community regeneration. They are not for profit and pay their members a dividend from any financial gains made.
